Podcast: Tee Box Talk

I started "Tee Box Talk" in June 2014 shortly before I launched my golf magazine, "Ace In The Cup." It was a way to connect with before the magazine launched, and also a way to build interest in the magazine. I quickly learned, though, I couldn't do it all, and the podcast met its end at nine episodes.

I learned a lot, though, from spending hours trying to pick out theme music--a choice I cringe on today; how to record a podcast--it involves much more than pressing play on your iPhone recorder; and editing in Adobe Soundbooth.

Episode 9: Coming Your Way

This week our staff is hard at work finishing up the inaugural issue of Ace In The Cup, which hits stands at your local golf course Aug. 25.

Episode 8: Small Fish, Big Pond

Guest: Shannon Fish, a professional golfer on the Symetra Tour. Fish, a professional golfer on the Symetra Tour, basically the LPGA’s equivalent of the Web.com Tour, is playing her first full year on Tour and takes an hour from her short vacation to talk to us about life as a professional golfer, her two appearances on the Big Break, the status of women’s golf, and her journey to the LPGA.

Episode 7: More Birdies Than Bogeys

Guest: Wes McClain, former University of Houston golfer.

When Wes McClain joined the UH golf program as a freshman, the program was still searching for its identity. It was the second year for head coach Jonathan Dismuke—now the director of golf—and the team was hardly a blip on the national radar. Through McClain’s four years, and through solid recruiting by Dismuke and his staff, the Cougars began their rise through the national rankings to No. 10 in the nation at this year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. En route to its finish, UH won four golf tournaments this season.

McClain talks to us about the program’s rise, working with Dismuke, qualifying for the U.S. Amateur, and the next steps in his career.

Episode 6: Sign Here, Please

Guests: CJ & D.E. Chester, For 24 years, CJ & D.E. Chester of Houston have collected autographs from golf’s biggest names—Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. If you can think of a golfer, the Chesters likely have his or her autograph. We sit down with the Houston couple to discuss their collection, their thousands of signed pieces, and how you can start a collection of your own.

Episode 5: Mulligan, Please

Ugh. We had a late cancellation on Monday, so we’re going to have to take a mulligan on this week’s episode of Tee Box Talk. We’ll be back next week as we sit down with C.J. & D.E. Chester, two of Houston’s most avid autograph collectors.

Episode 4: Breathing New Life

Guest: Allen Owen, Missouri City mayor on saving Quail Valley Country Club.

Episode 3: A Little Piece of Heaven

Guest: Casey Paulson, president of Bluejack National on teaming up with Tiger Woods to open Woods' first course designed in the United States.

Episode 2: The Fun Never Hibernates

Guest: Don Bachman, director of operations at Topgolf Houston North on how Topgolf is changing the game.

Episode 1: Winning Never Gets Old

Guest: Dan Keyser: lifelong Houston golfer, father, former golf shark. Growing up, I heard my dad tell all kinds of wild golf tales: from my grandpa heckling Lee Trevino, to his times hustling golfers on the course. He and I sat down to discuss what the game means to him, and his desire to pass it on to his two sons.
